The Doing Porridge Final Conference (December, 2023)
This conference at the Barbican marked the end of a two-year project, which drew on a sociological and intersectional lens to examine how women in prison experience and do food. The project understood food as symbolic and connected with broader issues within the penal system. It examined how women’s identities were informed by food practices and how food, occasionally, was used as a mechanism of social control and resistance.
We would like to thank everyone who contributed to this event. This includes our student helpers and our guest speakers Annie Owers, Lucy Baldwin, Nancy Louckes, Rachel Bell, Kevin McGrath, Katie Fraser, Caroline Lanskey, and Melissa Henderson.
